在現今不同規模的公司中，少不免會有一隻甚至多隻 router / switch 來提供網絡及上網股務。無論是網絡出現問題或是日常管理原因，很多時也會需要網絡器材的運作情況或如流量等資料。不同器材會提供文字或 web 介面來提供部份所需資料，但可能你要輸入不同指令或訪問不同 web 介面才找到需要的資料。

其實大部份商用網絡器材也提供簡單網絡管理協議 (SNMP) 的服務，通過簡單的操作去收集網絡設備的管理資訊如配置、流量 … 等等。可惜要在一部電腦用 SNMP 跟網絡器材溝通，該電腦要安裝一些 SNMP 軟件。不過那些軟件不是過於簡單就是過於複雜，因此未能簡易地令它們一個畫面來提供你所要的資料。

本課程主要教授如何可在任何有 web browser 的電腦或手機，通過 PHP 及 web server 去以網頁形式把所有你預設需要的資料在網頁中提供給你參考。資料來源除了可通過 SNMP 獲得外，就算一些未能用 SNMP 提供的資料，也可用 PHP 以 Command Line Interface (CLI) 方法去拿取資料。另外在網頁顯示通過 PHP 去做網絡測試 (如 ping, TCP port connectivity 等等) 的結果。

本課程除講解 SNMP、NetFlow 的知識及設定外，還會通過實例教授不同方面的知識包括：安裝及簡單設置 Linux 及 Apache web server，基本 PHP 應用，網頁中 HTML、JavaScript、CSS 的基本運用。學員不需具備以上知識，但學員須具備簡單的網絡知識 (如甚麼是 router / switch, 甚麼是 IP address 等)。另外對 Cisco IOS 操作有基本認識的話，可以更易明白實習上在 Cisco router 的配置。

注意：因為 Cisco IOS router / switch 可提供比較全面的 SNMP 支援以及可以通過 CLI 拿取資料，因此本課程主要以 Cisco IOS router / switch 作為網絡器材的示範。如你的網絡器材可支援 SNMP 及 CLI，也可以參考本課程教授的方法進行監控。

Basic Setup

  • Setup a web server using Linux.
  • Basic commands to maintain Linux and web server.
  • Using a simple Windows program to edit Linux configuration files through SFTP.
  • Configure basic authentication and SSL in web server.
  • Introduction to PHP and how to use it to provide web page.
  • Setting up a Linux server to provide SNMP data (in case you do not have equipment such as Cisco router or switch for trying exercises in this course yet).

Monitoring using SNMP

  • Introduction to SNMP.
  • How to setup SNMP in network device.
  • How to get SNMP data through some simple Windows programs.
  • Use PHP to get SNMP data.
  • Use HTML and CSS to present SNMP data.
  • Setup MRTG to gather SNMP traffic for traffic statistics.
  • Use PHP to provide web pages from data generated by MRTG.

Monitoring using CLI

  • Use PHP to connect through virtual terminal (e.g. telnet / SSH).
  • Use PHP to get data through CLI commands for showing in web page.
  • Example of using web page to change configuration.
  • Setup Cisco IOS user privilege level to limit access.

Monitoring network connectivity

  • Use PHP to obtain ping and traceroute result.
  • Use PHP to check TCP port connection.

Serving monitor data through simple Web Service

  • Use PHP to provide monitor data through Web Service.
  • Getting data from web service through JavaScript Ajax in a web page.

Gathering NetFlow data

  • Introduction to NetFlow.
  • How to setup and get NetFlow data in Cisco router.
  • Install and configure a piece of software in Linux to gather NetFlow data.
  • Simple example of using the software to obtain statistical information from the gathered NetFlow data
